2008 Host organisation

The National Foundation for Civil Society Development was founded by a special Act of the Croatian Parliament in October 2003, as a public foundation with the basic purpose of promoting and developing civil society in the Republic of Croatia. To fulfill its basic purpose, the National Foundation offers expert and financial support to programmes which encourage the not-for-profit sector’s sustainability, inter-sector cooperation, civil initiatives, philanthropy, voluntary work and the improvement of society’s democratic institutions.

Croatia

Croatia extends from the easternmost fringes of the Alps in the north-west to the Danube in the east and the Adriatic Sea in the south. It was previously part of Yugoslavia.  Since 1991, it has been an independent republic. Croatia is a candidate for European Union membership and is expecting an invitation to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in April 2008. The national language is Croatian.  English and German are spoken in the larger towns, and Italian in some coastal resorts.

Dubrovnik, the host city of the GEF 2008, is an historic city with a rich cultural history and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the Mediterranean’s most attractive and famous cities and its outstanding architecture and natural scenery make it a high-quality venue for conferences.

Background

The Grantmakers East Forum, formerly The Grantmakers East Group (GEG) was created in 1992 by a group of European Foundation Centre (EFC) members active in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Newly Independent States (NIS). The group first met as a side event at the EFC Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Conference. However, as interest for the group grew, in pace with developments of grantmaking in CEE and the NIS, the GEG was developed into an independent project resulting in the Annual Meeting (AM) which takes place in a different country each year.
